Mrs. Polly Barrick The people of Mound City were shocked Monday upon learning that Mrs. Polly Barrick had died suddenly at 3 o'clock that morning. She had not been well for a number of years, but was able to go about the house and help with the housework and dressmaking, which business she and her daughter have followed for several years. She was apparently in her usual health until after retiring, when she complained of not feeling well and of difficulty in breathing. A physician was called but could do nothing. She died in a very short time afterwards of congestion of the lungs. Mrs. Barrick was of a bright, sunny disposition, with a kind word for all. She and her only daughter, Nettie, have been companions for years and have been more like sisters than mother and daughter, and it is to Nettie to whom the sympathy of all Mound City is extended in her grief and loneliness. Mrs. Barrick was the daughter of Chester and Lydia Crowell and was born at Green Prairie, Wis., December 14, 1850, was married to James R. Barrick at Mound City, October 28, 1870. She was the mother of nine children of whom Nettie only is living. Her husband died in 1896 in Los Angeles, Cal., where they lived for nine years, returning to Mound City in 1899. She was an early settler in Linn county, having come with her parents in 1857. She joined the Baptist church in early womanhood and has lived a devoted Christian life during all these long and eventful years. Mrs. E. O. Strong of Clarksville, Ark., is her only living sister. Funeral services took place Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. at the Baptist church, conducted by the Rev. E. N. Gause, and interment made in Woodland cemetery. Those in attendance from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. E. O Strong, of Clarksville, Ark., Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Babcock, Mrs. John Eby and Joseph Barrick all of Pleasanton. The local relatives are Mrs. Wickham, Mrs. Harris and Alfred Smith who were cousins. Submitter's note: Death date believed to be 17 Mar 1919 per Barrick family Bible held at the Linn Co. Historical Society.
