Death of James R. Barrick

James Riley Barrick died at his residence on East First street, Tuesday evening at 7:20 o'clock, April 7th, 1896.

The deceased was born May 4th, 1834, in Illinois and was married in October 1870 to Miss P. M. Crowell, in Mound City, Kansas.  The deceased in early life was a carpenter and cabinet maker, but in later years was engaged in the mercantile business, and was a gentleman respected by all who knew him.

He came to California five years ago, hoping to regain his health, but consumption had too strong a hold upon his system and he was a sufferer for five years.  He had been confined to his bed since last January, and, although a great sufferer, was never heard to utter a word of complaint and was brave and cheerful through it all.  He was a member of the Methodist church and had a strong and abiding faith in God, and often said that his peace was made with his Maker, and did not fear death.

The deceased was an old soldier, having served in the war of the rebellion on the Union side and was a prominent Mason; he was the first Tyler of Rolenbeck Lodge, No. 319 A.F. and A.M., while under dispensation, and in recognition of his faithful services and the esteem in which he was held by his Masonic brethren, was reappointed to the same position which he held to the date of his death.
